The Crochet Mitred Cross

I bought Kay Gardiners knit mitred cross pattern and LOVE it!  But as I was working it, being the newbie knitter that I am, I thought "if I were crocheting this, I'd be done already!"  *bing!*  the light went on, and i got to work.  This is the pattern that I came up with for a crochet version of the mitred cross.

Crochet Mitre Cross

J Hook and Worsted Weight yarn. I used RHSS for sample.

Turning chain counts as first stitch throughout the pattern.

Main Color - (MC) - RH "Coffee"

Contrast Color - (CC) - RH Turqua

FIRST MITRE

Set up - With CC, ch 37.

Row 1 - Hdc in 2nd ch from hook (first stitch), hdc in next 16 chains, skip 2 ch (this is the first decreas), hdc in next 17 ch, ch 2, turn ( counts as first stitch of next row now and through out)

Row 2 - Hdc in next 15 stitches, skip 2 hdc's (this is the decrease), hdc in next 16 stitches to the end. Ch 2, turn.

Row 3 thru Row 9 - Work hdc's across, making the decreas in the middle by skipping two stitches until you have 9 hdc's on either side of the decrease. End off CC, and tie on MC. Ch 2, turn.

Row 10 and beyond - Work as first 9 rows, decreasing two stitches in the middle until you are down to do the last two stitches (including the turning chain), hdc in the last stitch and end off MC. The turning chain will be your corner "point".

SECOND MITRE

Row 1 - Hold square with MC (small color band) pointing in the upper left corner. Working into foundation chain of mitre one, with CC, tie on in the lower left corner. Work 18 Hdc's evenly across to next corner putting last stitch in the first first decrease section on the foundation chain. Chain 19, turn.

Row 2 - Working along the chain just made, hdc in second chain from hook and in each ch, Sk the last chain and the next stitch from previous row. This is your first decrease for this Mitre.

Row 3 to end of Mitre - Hdc across each row, skipping two stitches in the middle, just as on previous mitre until you have 9 stitches on either side of the decrease. Tie off CC and tie on MC and work to end just as mitre 1.

THIRD MITRE

Turn square so that MC of previous mitre is in the upper left corner, as with previous mitre. Tie on CC in lower left corner and work as mitre 2.

FOURTH MITRE

Work same as previous mitre, EXCEPT, do not chain 19 at the end of the row as done previously, work 18 hdc's down the other side on the opposite mitre (this is the first mitre you worked). Decrease and work each row as before.

EDGING

To work a log cabin edging, tie on MC on any corner and work HDC's evenly across to the next corner, ch 2 and turn. (Work an odd number of rows so that you are able to go right to the next side without having to tie off.) When first band is done, do not tie off, chain 2, and work evenly down next side of square to the next corner, ch 2 turn and work the same number of rows as previous band. When 2nd band is done, ch 2, turn and work evenly down this side, and work same number of rows. Do this for all 4 square sides.

ALTERNATE EDGING

You can also just work rounds on the square, or do granny rounds for as many rounds as you desire. Use your imagination and make up your own edging!
